Recent Articles and Information on the Recovery

Urban Land Institute's recommendations on how to best rebuild.

Interested in Volunteering? An article in USAToday describes how people are using their vacation time to help the Hurricane victims.

USAToday has a good section of its site devoted to the recovery. It is updated regularly and contains a lot of multimedia content.

Unfortunately, bodies are still being found. When you witness the extent of the flooding, it isn't a suprise. Here is an article on it.

Great interactive map and history at the NY Times.

Meeting with Mayor Capitano of Kenner, LA

Hoboken (my adopted hometown), adopted Kenner LA as a sister city and offered to help with post-Hurricane recovery efforts. Party With Purpose was asked to assist, but we had already committed to donate funds to the NO Boys and Girls Club. Hoboken's efforts to help continue and I will continue to support those efforts as an individual or as president of PWP.

Since I was in the area, I asked Hoboken City Councilman Chris Campos to put me in touch with Kenner Mayor Philip Capitano. I ended up having a great meeting with him last night. I had no idea what to expect, but I found him to be intelligent, honest, and warm. He is extremely grateful of Hoboken's assistance and even visited Hoboken last week to thank the city for our help. We discussed life, charity work, politics and most importantly, the recovery efforts. He has a host of challenges. He was kind enough to give us lapel pins of the official Kenner seal and logo. Many of his residents haven't returned and many that have don't have anywhere to live so they are living in tents. He said FEMA was akin to "water". "Everytime you think you have a grasp of it (and the people in charge) it seems to slip through through your fingers". On top of all this, he is in a bitter battle with his Police Chief, who is an elected official like him. Both are running against each other in the next Mayor election taking place in April. Mobile Alabama

Just pulled into downtown. It is REALLY quiet for a major city. I am not sure if it is always this way or it is because of the Hurricane.

Posting to a Blog in real-time. Create a "virtual you".

I am traveling east to Daytona Beach for Thanksgiving right now. That's right, I am updating this blog as I am in the car.

When I decided to take this trip, one of the things I wanted to do was test some of the web services and technologies which would allow me to "report" and document my trip in real-time. so far so good. Here are some of the ways I have been doing it:

  • I have taken pictures with my Verizon LG cell phone. Using Blogger's mobile upload service I can automatically post them to this blog in seconds by emailing the picture on my cell phone to the go@blogger.com address. Text messaging has come in handy too.
  • The audio blogger service is neat. By calling a special phone number and leaving a voicemail, I am able to automatically add an audio file to my blog.
  • I purchased a new Canon SD 450 Elph Digital Camera and a 1 Gig SD card which can hold 600+ pictures. The SD card can be loaded directly to my laptop. I am using Picasa software (free from Google) to save and manipulate the pictures locally.
  • I signed up for a flickr (owned by Yahoo) photo hosting/sharing account and tested it by uploading some picures there. The quality of the uploaded photo isn't that good. I have also been Blogger's own photo upload, but it is very slow.
  • One of the coolest technologies has been the Verizon Broadband connection for my laptop. The connection is slow at times, but it has allowed me to stay connected almost anywhere at anytime. I have actually been updating this blog while we have been driving from New Orleans to Mobile Alabama (where I am right now).
  • I have a Sony Handycam and have taken some good video with it. When I get a chance I will work on editing and posting some of the video.
  • I have been using my Blackberry extensively.

By using all these real-time technologies and devices, I can almost create a virtual, real-time photo album with audio, video and text without a van full of equipment and satellite hookup. The Internet and technology has come a long way.

Touring the Flooded areas and Bourbon Street

I stayed at the Wyndam Bourbon Orleans at 717 Orleans Street on Monday night. When I booked the room on Orbitz, the hotel mentioned that you have to be ready for some limited services. Like most businesses, they have found creative ways to do the best they can with what they have. For example, instead of cleaning the room everyday, they do it every three. They also don't have as much service staff on hand, but everyone is doing the best they can, and with a smile.

The night I arrived I grabbed a drink at Pat O'Briens and had one of their famous Hurricanes. They would normally be serving dinner and have 20+ people on staff. This night they had a total of four. What they lacked in staff, they made up for in character. We had great conversations with Sid (operations manager) and Steve (assistant operations manager). Sid told us stories going back 70 years. One involved a 67 year employee who had never missed a day of work and worked 7 days a week for much of those 67 years. On his major anniversaries, he was given everything from a $10,000 bonus to a new Corvette. Unfortunately, since the storm, they haven't heard the whereabouts of their long time employee.

Most people you speak to have a story about being relocated after the storm. One waiter said he was finally required to evacuate after eight days. He was taken by the Army and put on a place sponsored by the Red Cross. He had no idea he was being flown to Minnesota until they were 15 minutes from landing. He said he was well-taken care of and spent a couple of weeks there. He was given some money and traveled to Florida before coming back to NO. Service workers are in very high demand. Burger King is paying a high hourly wage and a $6,000 bonus if the employees successfully stay on the job for up to a year.

My father and I spent the day touring the most flooded areas of New Orleans. Bobby Smith, the President of the SE LA Boys and Girls Club brought us to inspect two of their Clubs; The NFL Club located by the Cooper Public Housing Development and the Gretna/West Bank Club. This picture is of Bobby's Daughter Briana inside the NFL club. She joined us for the tour. Don't worry, the kids will not be allowed in until the centers are deemed completely safe.

I am proud to say that on behalf of many people and companies that contributed, Party With Purpose was able to make a donation of $16,500 to help reopen the West Bank/Gretna Club. The money is going to be used for equipment, paint and other items which will help to welcome the kids back when they return to the center. Bobby hopes to open this center by January 1st. They only have 9 out of 80 pre-Katrina employees still on staff.

I have uploaded some pictures to a flickr photo sharing acccount. Check them out here.
The flooding affects an amazingly large area and the impact is deep. Most of the flooded areas are ghost towns. There are flooded cars and debris everywhere. Many street lights are out, but there is a steady flow of vehicles. You see clean up crews at every 10 or 20 houses or so.

Although I heard a lot of the flooding was in the poorest areas, I did see that some wealthier areas were flooded too. The flood reached 4-6 feet in most areas.

Bourbon Street actually looks relatively unscathed. Many of the stores are open, but with limited hours. Many of the fine art galleries are still showing their art. There is a heavy law enforcement presence. The officers are LA State police, New Orleans cops, National Guard and a number of NY State Troopers.

Although it is off the front page of most national papers, everything on TV and in the paper is about the Hurricane. Commercials are all related to recovery.

The paper says almost all the Mardi Gras "krew captains" (who organize the floats) have committed to march. I heard they will be conducting Mardi Gras, but only for about half the time (6 days). They don't know if the City has the infrastrucure and police to handle the entire event. Due to the reduced schedule, some krews may not be able to march. Some think a reduced Mardi Gras sends the wrong message to the outside world. I agree. They should find a way to make Mardi Gras as "normal" as possible and run the entire time.

Not many restaurants are open, even outside the City. But, the ones that are, are packed. Many only have enough employees to staff one shift a day. I heard about 30% of the restaurants are open and Thanksgiving reservations are hard to come by. The biggest issue has been finding staff. The problem is that the employees you would normally hire aren't back in NO yet. They aren't coming back because they don't have anywhere to live.

I have many other stories and pictures. I will be updating this blog over the next few days as I upload pictures from my digital camera.

Boat at the Marina

Next to this boat I met a guy who was examining his former office at his boat company. Three sides of the building were torn off so you could walk right in.

House boat on dock

This marina on Lake Ponchartrain didn't sustain heavy damage, but it did have this amazing site. The water was high enough to lift this house boat over, and on top of its dock. I tried to walk under it (I know, real smart) but the dock was a little rocky....

Flood Map

This map (from last weekend's paper) showed the extent of the flooding. We visited almost all of the most heavily flooded areas.

Walking around Bourbon Street and the latest T shirts

My Dad and I.

A number of Hurricane related t-shirts adorn the trinket shops on Bourbon Street. One shirt said "Girls Gone Wild". The "girls" where Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. Get 'em while their hot.

Carnival cruise ships on the mississippi

This is the river walk along the Mississippi. The city is to the right. A famous NO river boat just returned from a "recovery tour" up the river. It is docked to the right (not sure if you can see it in this picture). I heard an interview with the captain. He was brought to tears when describing his homecoming and how most of the ships crew is homeless. The Carnival cruise ships are towards the left. They are being returned shortly.

Jackson Square where President Bush spoke

Same spot! See an article about it here.

The Missippippi River

On my approach to the airport you can see that the Mississippi is up and running.

Leaving Newark for a stop in Vegas before I head to New Orleans
